China Airlines and BOC Aviation orders give Airbus sales big boost
Airbus Sees Major Boost in March Orders from China Airlines and BOC Aviation
Airbus wrapped up March on a high note, thanks to significant orders from China Airlines and leasing giant BOC Aviation.
BOC Aviation has placed a firm order for 70 additional A320neo family aircraft, reinforcing its position as Airbus’ largest customer by backlog. This deal brings BOC Aviation’s total remaining Airbus orderbook to around 200 aircraft, and its total Airbus aircraft deliveries—across purchases and leasebacks—to over 700 since its first order in 1996.
“This transaction will lift our remaining Airbus orderbook to around 200 aircraft and takes our total Airbus aircraft deliveries to over 700 (including purchase and leasebacks) since our first order in 1996,” said Steven Townend, Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of BOC Aviation. “This order solidifies our position as one of the top five global aircraft operating lessors and provides us with a strong delivery pipeline into the next decade. We look forward to providing more airline customers with this popular fuel-efficient and technologically advanced aircraft.”
Benoît de Saint-Exupéry, EVP Sales for Airbus’ Commercial Aircraft business, commented: “This new major order by BOC Aviation is a testament to its enduring confidence in the A320 family—the world’s most successful single-aisle aircraft. This significant investment makes BOC Aviation one of Airbus’ largest customers and reflects the strong and continued market demand for our fuel-efficient aircraft. We look forward to continuing our successful partnership.”
Meanwhile, China Airlines has finalized its agreement to purchase 10 A350-1000s, converting a commitment made at the end of 2024 into a firm order. The airline plans to deploy the aircraft on long-haul routes to North America and Europe, expanding capacity and complementing its existing fleet of A350-900s.
“Our investment in the A350-1000 supports our international growth strategy and reflects our commitment to improving the travel experience for our passengers,” said Kao Shing-Hwang, Chairman of China Airlines. “We are confident that the A350-1000, with its superior range, fuel efficiency, and comfort, will play a key role in transforming our long-haul operations.”
Airbus’ de Saint-Exupéry added: “We welcome China Airlines to our fast-growing family of A350-1000 operators. As an early adopter of the A350-900, China Airlines has played a pioneering role in embracing cutting-edge aviation technology. By choosing the A350-1000—the Long Range Leader—they continue to elevate their fleet and deliver exceptional efficiency and comfort to long-haul travelers.”
These orders are also a win for the UK economy. The wings for all Airbus aircraft (except the A220) are manufactured at Airbus’ Broughton facility in North Wales, while the engines powering the A350 are produced by Rolls-Royce in Derby.
